Russell Lorfing is a nationally recognized criminal defense trial attorney and former federal prosecutor who represents individuals facing serious state and federal criminal charges throughout West Texas. As Managing Partner of Keith & Lorfing, PLLC, Mr. Lorfing has built a reputation as a courtroom-focused advocate known for handling complex, high-stakes criminal matters and delivering trial-ready defense strategies grounded in extensive prosecutorial and litigation experience.
Before entering private practice, Mr. Lorfing served as an Assistant United States Attorney in Lubbock, Texas, where he prosecuted federal criminal cases across the region and led a human trafficking task force in Saipan, a U.S. territory in the Pacific. Earlier in his career, he clerked for the Honorable Barbara Harvey at the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals, gaining firsthand insight into appellate decision-making and criminal procedure at the highest level of Texas courts. His background as both a state and federal prosecutor provides him with a deep understanding of government investigations, charging decisions, and trial strategy—experience he now leverages to defend clients accused of serious felony and white-collar offenses.
Mr. Lorfing’s criminal defense practice focuses on federal criminal defense, white-collar investigations, fraud, drug offenses, firearms charges, and other complex felony matters. Over the course of his career, he has served as lead counsel in dozens of jury trials, and his firm has collectively handled thousands of cases across West Texas courts. He is particularly recognized for his knowledge of electronic evidence and digital investigations, having been designated a Cyber Hacking Intellectual Property Prosecutor and overseeing cybercrime investigations throughout the region during his federal service.
A frequent lecturer and trainer, Mr. Lorfing has provided instruction to federal prosecutors and law enforcement agencies including the FBI, IRS, DEA, and the NCMEC on issues involving federal criminal litigation and the admissibility of electronic evidence. His professional accomplishments have earned significant peer and community recognition, including his inclusion to Super Lawyers, appointment as Co-Chair of the Federal Criminal Defense Committee for the Texas Criminal Defense Lawyers Association, and multiple honors recognizing him among the leading trial and criminal defense lawyers in Abilene.
Mr. Lorfing earned his Juris Doctor from St. Mary’s School of Law, where he served as class president, and holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Texas at Austin. He is admitted to practice in Texas and numerous federal courts, including the United States Supreme Court and several federal appellate courts, reflecting the national scope and sophistication of his criminal litigation practice.
