Mr. Kilfin earned his Honors Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Trent University before obtaining his Juris Doctor from Stetson University College of Law, nationally recognized for its trial advocacy program. During law school, he was selected for Stetson’s prosecution clinic, where he gained hands-on courtroom experience conducting legal research, arguing motions, and assisting in trial preparation. Following graduation, he joined the Pinellas County State Attorney’s Office after passing the Florida Bar on his first attempt.
During his six-year tenure as an Assistant State Attorney, Mr. Kilfin prosecuted thousands of criminal cases ranging from misdemeanors to first-degree murder. He conducted more than sixty jury trials to verdict involving charges such as homicide, armed robbery, drug trafficking, sexual battery, arson, and burglary. Rapid promotions within the office led to assignments in both misdemeanor and felony divisions, where he served as lead trial counsel and developed extensive courtroom and litigation experience.
After transitioning briefly into civil practice, Mr. Kilfin co-founded a respected criminal defense firm in Pinellas County, representing clients across a broad spectrum of criminal matters including violent offenses, domestic violence allegations, firearms offenses, and complex drug cases. In 2013, he established The Kilfin Law Firm, P.C., a practice dedicated exclusively to DUI and criminal defense. Since founding the firm, he has represented hundreds of clients in both state and federal courts throughout St. Petersburg, Clearwater, and Tampa.
Mr. Kilfin’s approach emphasizes early and aggressive case development, often working proactively with prosecutors to seek charge reductions, diversion opportunities, or favorable resolutions before formal filing decisions are made. When necessary, he prepares every matter for trial, drawing on his prosecutorial experience to anticipate the State’s strategy and challenge evidentiary weaknesses. His practice also reflects a strong awareness of collateral consequences, including licensing issues, immigration concerns, sentencing exposure, and record sealing or expungement opportunities.
“Donald is widely recommended for complex criminal defense throughout the Tampa Bay region. Clients commend his persistence and accessibility, and peers note his extensive prosecutorial experience and sustained commitment to effective, results-driven criminal defense.”
